Audi Q7 Review
Counted among one of the most luxurious SUVs, the Audi Q7 is a crossover vehicle which is based on the Volkswagen's PL-71 platform. This platform is also shared by the VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne. It was designed to work as a dual performer to run like a stream over the free ways and to swallow the bumps on off road terrains. However, the Q7 is an extreme performer over the plane surfaces and not a good deal to get off the tarmac. This soft-roader SUV was introduced in year 2005 and was displayed as the concept in January 2003 at the North American International Auto Show. The company started the production line for Q7 in year 2002. It is a perfect doer with all the amenities that a class leading SUV should possess. The quattro permanent all wheel drive bonded to the centrally locking differential gets the Q7 perfect ride to suit its personality. The continuous damping control mated with self leveling air suspensions are the few aspects which are countable as the Q7's credentials. The vehicle limits over the low range transfer and it does not have a low transfer range case and it is not meant to be taken for any such applications either. When seen from the outside, the vehicle here is not aggressive enough to beat the likes of Land Rover, Mercedes and Toyota, but it instead have a simple minimalistic design. The extremely sober, standard yet robust design is something great to do. Their is a good wheelbase assigned to the Q7 which makes it distinct from the other machines sharing the platform. It has got a third row for added passenger room while more luggage area with seats being folded. The driver gets the most happening place in the car which is surrounded with loads of buttons, switches and a lot of similar stuff with which the operator is authorized to efficiently utilize all the features of the Q7. Talking about the seating comfort, you will get every desirable equipment here along with keeping the familiar stance of Audi. The turbocharged V6 diesel engine is at par with all of its competitors making them bite the dust.
Mileage and Fuel economy
Their is no doubting about the performance of the vehicle, but the fuel efficiency is something that suffers adversely. With Audi Q7 3-liter diesel engine, the mileage output lies around 14.7 kmpl, which is very low for a diesel engine.
The Indonesian audience has got the V6 diesel engine with turbocharger and common rail technology. This makes it extremely good on power and it also carries a good pulling potential. The 245 bhp of power between 2910 rpm to 4500 rpm is exceptionally well, but the other models outside the country have got better dynamics as well. The torque assisted with this engine is 600 Nm between 1500 rpm to 3000 rpm count.
Acceleration & Pickup
The triple liter engine pumps up frugally and catches a great clutch on the first rev itself. The engine is capable enough to speed the car up to the 100 kmph mark from start in just under 8 seconds. However, the competitors have better numbers.
The Audi Q7 is a no nonsense vehicle which inherits the heritage Audi styling and the closer look over the exterior bits will let you find a lot of similarities between the other Audi vehicles. The car is based on a potent platform but it doesn't reflect that with its design appeal. It is rather simple, sophisticated and smart. It won't let you even think of pushing it down the roads. It looks delicate but at the same time, it also carries the tough and sturdy German built. The wide open Audi grill and the non striking headlight cluster are the aspects which make it a gentle vehicle crafted more to attend your board meetings rather than to hang out with pals. The positioning of lights including the headlight, side blinkers and fog lamps is stacked with side blinkers merged into the bumpers as a strip unit while keeping the fog lamps at the extreme low position which are not visible at the first look. The whole bumper is designed with black plastic grill component inserts and a glossy finished license plate mounting spot. The body style is devoid of the silly curves and character endowing things. The Germans have focused more over the sensible appearance and the 18-inch rims are one of its parts. Notably, the Q7 looks really long thanks to the extended wheelbase of the shared platform and it takes care of the royal facet demands of the buyers. The rear has complete light unit mounted over the tail gate while the reflector have been fitted perfectly in strips over the bumpers. On either sides, the exhaust tail is finished with chrome inserts to add a striking statement.
The stretched length from the base platform ranges it to whooping 5086 mm of length with 1983 mm of width and 1737 mm of height. As per the dimensions, the Q7 has become eligible to be counted among the longest SUVs available from any manufacturer. The wheelbase is longest of the lot with 3002 mm.
The lush and premium cabin is as smart as the outside of this vehicle. Audi has not left even a single spot uncovered with the leather texture. The whole dashboard is wrapped with gray shaded leather and it feels ultra premium. Like any other Audi vehicle, it has also got the perfect balance of shades and luxury. It is somehow similar to that of the vehicle range from the company's portfolio. The switch gears and other controls are good to use and are comfortable also. The seats are as brilliantly cushioned and padded as they should be because of the brand name associated with it. Audi has tried its best to make this platform suitable for seven passengers and they have made it such too, especially for families because the last seat is always kept reserved for kids which is mounted a bit on higher side. This reflects the issue of low headroom and hence, adults would find it bad to opt for the last row. If you are going with two rows occupied, fold down the last row and discover a huge luggage area for your complete stuff.
The Q7 ranks first because of its cabin space and length acquired by it in the segment. This prolonged region is practical to a good extent as it gets more occupants and goods, but the last row will feel like a trouble. It is mount at a level upper than the other seats and hence low on headroom. The leg room and knee room are also comfort killing and would demand a frequent change of position throughout the journey. Concerning the dashboard mounts, the Audi multimedia stereo system is a gem for music lovers, it drags all the essential aspects required for a car of this category and won't let you miss anything. A number of pockets are also crafted to make out space for your small belongings.
The cabin has a huge boot loading area. With 775 liters of boot space, it has got a phenomenal approach in begging a lead. The seats are foldable and with 2nd and 3rd row down, they clear up 2035 mm of luggage area which is simply generous and huge.
Engine and Performance
The Audi Q7 is powered with a 3.0 liter TFSI and TDI Quattro V6 engines with turbocharger and common rail technology. These engine are a class leading machine and is counted among the best machineries available. The power output of TFSI engine is 356 hp and TDI engine produces 245hp. Comparing both the engines, it is clearly seen that the 3.0-litre engine is more powerful and can reach to its top speed of 250kmph within a time frame of just 6.1 seconds than the 3.0-litre engine with a top speed of 234kmph.With these powerful engines, It is noted that he company's idea of producing a super fast SUV with soft-roader dynamics lives with this engine.
Stereo and Accessories
An Audi with Bose sound system is like being surrounded with crisp and loud music, away from the outside world. The Q7 boasts surround sound system which consists of dynamic driving noise compensation. This function grabs a 10 channel amplifier with 14 loudspeakers, a dashboard mounted centrally located speaker, rear embedded with 2 more surround sound loudspeakers and a spare wheel inserted sub woofer. The MMI display with 6.5 inch size touchscreen is integrated into the dashboard which demonstrates the vehicle's information at each point of the journey and is included with trip computer statistics, auto check system and digital speed display with GPS navigation.
The Q7 is boasted with alloy wheels and they are 18-inch in size. The tall body appearance given to the same has employed a rock breaking personality with these sets. The tyres worn over these robust and stylish wheels are sized at 235/60 R18.
Braking and Handling
Pushing the Q7 to extremes is a good thing; the SUV manages to get out of sudden obvious troubles and it is equipped heavily for the same as well. The handling is well defined, but if you drive any sedan or low body vehicle with same specifications, you would find it more happening. The tall body of the Q7 is a kind of hurdle in excreting out the best of the V6 installed inside. The body rolls are however, negligible and they get resolved in a well balanced ratio also. The off-roading is not filled to the core in this vehicle and hence expect less for the same here. The brakes employed are ceramic discs on all the wheels that make up for an efficient braking.
Safety and Security
Getting into the depth, the Q7 has 8 airbags; it includes, full size front airbags, side airbags and curtain airbags for all the occupants. Moreover, the driver information display is assisted with tyre pressure monitor and generates a warning when it senses the dropping tyre pressure in any of the wheels. The electronic stability control program manages the vehicle over slippery surfaces and rolling corners. It keeps the wheels under specified rotations to stabilize the body against the vehicle's possible flow. Being an SUV, the Audi has also installed hill assist function to the vehicle which commands hill start and hill descent functions to add additional traction and grip over the road keeping the vehicle balanced. The traction control has also got its place in the vehicle here which is good for slight off roading over muddy and non rigid surfaces.
- The Q7 is well balanced and endows good ride quality
- It has a supreme level of equipments inside the cabin
- The engine is responsive and handles all the tasks well
- Simplistic looks might not attract everyone
- The last seat is good just for the brochure and not very comfortable
- High NVH level over high speeds
