Making its debut at the North American International Auto Show in January 2015, the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class was presented as the successor to the Mercedes-Benz W166, also known as the M-Class. Although the model was presented as a ‘facelift’ of the older Mercedes M-Class, the GLE-Class was used for both the wagon and the coupe version of the W166 model. The vehicle now looks like a worthy competitor to the BMW X5 and X6 and features several new features and changes to the car’s exteriors. Despite of the new GLE coupe sharing several components and the platform with the older M-Class, it has a totally new body structure and unlike most mild ‘facelifts’ looks like a totally new vehicle.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class comes in two different body styles, one being a Wagon and the other being a mid-sized coupe. The coupe variant, it was presented with a choice of 5 engine variants and 3 different types of transmission. The engine types for the GLE coupe vary from a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine to a V6 and even a V8. The transmission options feature a 7-speed automatic, 9-speed automatic and CVT transmission for the Hybrid model. The wagon variant was presented with a hybrid drivetrain that utilizes a massive V6 engine and an electric motor to provide nearly 450 hp, making it one of the most powerful SUVs in its class. Although the automatic transmissions supplied with the GLE-Class do a tremendous job in keeping fuel consumption to a bare minimum, one cannot expect a lot of mileage from engines as large as a V6 and V8. All the engines are also supplied with a start/stop button that allows keyless operation and also reduces the vehicle’s fuel consumption.
When launched the first time in 1997, the Mercedes M Class was considered to be a groundbreaking vehicle as Luxury Sports Utility Vehicles was a pretty unheard concept back then. Selling almost 1.6 million units in the past 18 years of its existence, the latest version W166 has brought several new changes to the vehicle’s design, which has been adjusted to suit the modern aesthetics. The front fascia of the vehicle was changed to a completely new grille bearing a stylized and gloss-finish Mercedes-Benz emblem. The hard edges from the older design have been sanded to create more smooth lines and redesigned tail lights. The GLE Class has also been provided with a higher ground clearance in accordance to the vehicle’s off-roading capabilities. The increased ground clearance also makes the vehicle appear much taller and intimidating than its predecessor.
Although the exteriors of the GLE-Class are quite similar to the older M-Class, the interiors is where you will be able to see the maximum differences. It borrows the crafty looking infotainment console from the Mercedes C-Class, and features a touchscreen-enabled COMAND system. The multifunction steering is supplied with audio controls and Bluetooth connectivity. The centre console is large enough to take up a considerable amount of space on the dashboard and as a result, the AC vents have been pushed to the sides and sit neatly around the touchscreen panel.
Include all interior details of the car along with audio system, seat comfort and interior measurements of the car (if given). Also include the boot space of the car in litres. It also has a rear-seat entertainment console, panoramic sunroof, satellite radio and tri-zone climate control.
Being renowned for their high-performance luxury automobiles, Mercedes-Benz surely doesn’t take driver and passenger safety for granted. The vehicle received a 5-star safety rating by the Euro NCAP putting it at the top in its class. It is loaded with tons of safety and enhancement features such as SRS Airbags, collision prevention warning, surround view camera, driver drowsiness alert, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, pre-collision braking, lane assist and a highly intelligent Pre-Safe system that adjusts the passenger and driver seatbelts and headrests according to the force of impact and minimizes injury. It also closes the windows automatically in case of an impending accident.
When talking about Mercedes-Benz automobiles, they do not need any sort of approval as the brand speaks for the quality of the vehicles. The Mercedes GLE-Class follows the same tradition and has presented a complete luxury off-roading solution. With stunning and luxurious interiors along with the revamped exteriors, it is certainly one of the best options in its particular segment and can face any sort of competition in the market.
