The Gran Max MB is a small compact van with 8 to 9 passenger carrying capacity. It was introduced in year 2007 with a pickup-loading variant on offer as well. The Gran Max is bigger in length than the Luxio, but has constrained dynamics in other two aspects. The engines available for this vehicle are driven on gasoline fuel and delivers mileage adequate for the touring purpose. The 1.3-liter and 1.5-liter engine are well versed to stretch the passengers and luggage efficiently. The Indonesian plant of the Daihatsu exports this vehicle to Japan as well and it is marketed under the Toyota branding.
The Gran Max MB from Daihatsu is powered with two engine alternatives; the 1.3 liter K3-DE DOHC 4 cylinder 16 valve gasoline engine is the small one on offer. It churns out 88 PS of power at 6000 rpm with 114.7 Nm of torque at 4400 rpm. The second engine is a 1.5 liter displacer which generates 97 PS of power at 6000 rpm. The torque associated to it is 134.3 Nm at 4400 rpm. These engines suit the standard requirement of a passenger van and/or a cargo vehicle. The low rev performance of the engine is fine enough and provide good amount of torque to deal with the traffic scenarios and other regions of requirement. On an average, the Gran Max MB delivers 13.4 kmpl of mileage.
The Gran Max MB is designed over a ladder chassis and hence, it is particularly made to carry load. The looks are dull and not at all striking, but the vans are bound to not to be focused over the cosmetic department. It looks extremely simple and easy to use. It is spread across a length of 4045 mm while the width is 1665 mm and the height is 1900 mm. The wheelbase is defined as 2650 mm to carry more seats at a time and the ground clearance is 165 mm which is not so exciting. It is available in alloy wheels and steel wheel trims which can be chosen as per the user's requirement, and they are wrapped up with 165 R13-C tyres
The cabin is quite simple and it doesn't carry any hi-end features as such. It is shaded is single color and offer only basic equipment level to call it loaded. The dashboard is in single tone gray color; it has few pockets to hold your small belonging like phone, slips, notes etc. Their is a small music player installed in the dashboard which is also quite a primitive equipment. To increase the space at the footers, the gear knob is also embedded into the dashboard. The main focus in given over the cabin space where a number of passengers can travel together at a time. However, the equipment level is better than the earlier version. The last row seat is foldable and allows a huge cargo space to exist.
The company has employed ventilated disc brakes at the front wheels while the rear wheels are equipped with drum units. The front seats are bonded with seat belts for safety against sudden brakes. The rack and pinion steering is easy to use and cuts the corners effectively. The anterior portion is relying over the McPherson struts with coil springs and the hinder portion rests over the 5 link coil spring. The ladder chassis under the body is quite rigid to hold the load perfectly and the passengers can roam around with the same over longer trips. The upper body is also made up of high strength metal. In totality, the Gran Max MB doesn't offer any superior safety dynamics, but they are well managed as per the limits of the vehicle.
The Gran Max is budget centric vehicle and yet capable of acting as a commuter for big families. It offers basic equipment level and safety apparatuses. The engines on offer are good, but the safety system should be redefined.
