Known to be one of the most successful sedan models in the US since 1989, Honda Accord 2016 recently made its way in the Indonesian capital at the 24th rendition of the Indonesia International Motor Show. Spawning over 10 generation Honda Accord has been the namesake for several car models including hatchbacks and wagons. Although full size sedan sales in the country isn’t as flourishing as other segments such as MPVs and compact city cars, the latest Accord’s release is seen as the company’s strategy to capitalize on the low competition in the market. The new vehicle carries several significant cosmetic and technological changes that helps it stand apart from the older model.
The new Accord comes powered with only a single engine namely a 2.4-litre i-VTEC mill. Mated to a 5-speed Continuously variable transmission, the engine churns out 185 hp @ 6400 rpm and 246 Nm of torque @ 3900 rpm. The CVT is also supplied with shift paddles behind the steering wheels that allow for a more controlled driving experience across variable terrain. Unfortunately, the vehicle is only presented with a single variant and we might never be able to see the monstrous V6 i-VTEC in action. But since we already know that such vehicles don’t sell like hotcakes in Indonesia, it doesn’t really matter much to the fans. The direct fuel engine technology also provides the new Accord with a decent fuel economy of around 17-18 kmpl.
The 2016 model is certainly a major change from its older model. The only variant released in Indonesia is presented with brand new LED headlamps that flow seamlessly with the thick chrome grille. The front bumper and the radiator mesh is also a brand new design and fog lamps now come integrated with LED lights as well, providing a futuristic look to the vehicle’s face. The rear now features dual exhaust pipes on either sides and a honeycomb grille pattern rear bumper. The taillight clusters too follow the same design aesthetic as the front grille and neatly wrap around the corners of the trunk.
As usually seen with facelifts, the exteriors only receive minor updates while majority changes are included in the vehicle’s interiors. The dashboard has been completely revamped and now includes a more elegant yet simplistic design with chrome accent and wooden finish. The centre console also looks awesome and includes a touch-screen enabled infotainment panel that supports airplay, navigation and internet access through Wi-Fi. It also features an automatic dual-zone climate control system that ensures maximum passenger comfort regardless of the outside temperature. The leather trimmed seats are also some of the most comfortable aspects that one can find in the same segment and the power adjustable driver seat can be adjusted in 10 directions. The rain sensing windshield wipers also turn on automatically as soon as they sense any significant amount of moisture on glass surface.
There is no doubt that Honda motors creates some of the most safe to drive automobiles across the globe and the Accord 2016 is no exception. Built with a highly rigid frame, the Accord includes their revolutionary ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) platform, that will effectively distribute the force of impact away from the passengers in their specially designed crumple zone. Other advanced features such as ABS, EBD, Road departure mitigation, Anti-collision, lane-departure alert, rear camera and brake assist, making it one of the most well equipped luxury cars in the particular segment.
All in all, the 2016 Accord is certainly a great luxury vehicle to own, if you’re in Indonesia. Despite the fact that the Toyota Camry, that belongs to the same segment, Honda didn’t do much great in the market, Honda Accord might change that through its much sportier looks and impressive features.
