Toyota Avanza Review

The current ASEAN market seems to be focusing heavily on the multi-utility segment with new MPVs rolling out every month, Toyota Avanza, the entry level MPV designed specifically for city operations remains an unprecedented favorite coming at an unbeatable price. Versatility is a trump card when it comes to buying a car, and Toyota Avanza uses this need of the people to play to its advantage. The Avanza is a value for money compact MPV and comes equipped with only petrol engines.

Under the hood of Toyota Avanza, you’ll find yourself staring at a 3SZ-VE 1.5-litre petrol 4 cylinders engine that follow a DOHC 16 valve configuration which is enhanced by the VVTi technology. Avanza is capable of producing 104 PS at 6000 rpm. The other engine on offering is K3-VE 1.3-litre petrol engine generating 92 PS of power at 6000 rpm. This seven seater MPV from Toyota carries a very suave look as it drives by in style. The sporty and stylish front grille are hard to miss and compare with any other MPV.

Toyota Avanza is launched in the Indonesian market under 7 variants – Avanza 1.3 G M/T, 1.3 G M/T Luxury, 1.3 A/T Luxury, 1.3 G A/T , 1.5 G M/T luxury, 1.3 E M/T and 1.3 E A/T. On the outside, there has been a lot of improvements in Toyota Avanza with high dynamic stability complimented with well defined character lines, new radiator grilles, roof spoiler, dynamic head-lamp and tail lamps. On the interior, one gets hold of MID display on the top variants (a feature generally absent from entry level MPVs), steering wheels embedded with in-built audio switches and many more. The seats and door trimming are also intricately designed to provide for maximum leg space and comfort. It also comes equipped with airbags for the passenger and the driver keeping safety a top priority. If you are willing to pay a premium for the 1.5 variant of the Toyota Avanza, it boasts of ABS and EBD + Brake Assist, power steering and central lock to name a few.

Mileage and fuel economy

Toyota Avanza delivers a pretty decent mileage for a dedicated 7-seater offering 13.2 km/l (figures for 1.5-litre engine) that ensure lesser stops at the fuel station during long rides. The VVT-i technology used in the 1.5L engine with a DOHC 16 valve configuration provides that you fill your tank less often. The fuel capacity stands at 45 liters.

The 1.3-litre K3-VE engine with a 4 cylinder, 16 valve DOHC configuration embedded with VVT-i technology provides a maximum output power counting 92 PS at 6000 rpm delivering a maximum torque of 117 Nm at 4400 rpm. The 1.5-litre petrol engine installed on the 1.5E/G/S on the other hand is capable of giving you maximum raw power of 104 PS at 6000 rpm with a maximum torque of 136 Nm at 4400 rpm.

Acceleration and Pickup

From a standstill, the 1.5-litre petrol engine of the Avanza can cross 100kmph checkpoint in well under 13.5 seconds. Considering that this is an entry level MPV, these figures are very impressive. Its rear drive train helps generate ample power which works well in providing more acceleration. The top speed of the car measures at 165kmph on the tachometer. The 1.3-litre variant does not disappoint either racing 0-100 kmph from a halt in 15 seconds.

The exteriors of Toyota Avanza have been designed by keeping the theme sporty in mind. The front features sporty front grille and body colored bumpers . Even the side view mirrors are body colored. However, one thing missing on the Avanza was electronically controlled side view mirrors. The lighting equipment on the front comprises of a multi-reflector headlamp, round bright fog lamps and turn indicators. The roof spoiler is maintained on a decently high position, as a result vehicles approaching from a distance get a clear view of your vehicle braking. The taillights are conventionally stacked upon each other making the entire look neat and clean. One major inclusion was the inclusion of a rear spoiler and wiper which comes handy under unfavorable weather. Avanza comes with 15 inch alloys making the ride even more comfortable.

Exterior Measurements

This 7 seater MPV measures up to 4140 mm in length and 1660 mm in width excluding the side mirrors. With a height of 1695 mm, Toyota, Avanza makes it sure that it rises over the others making it easy for it to be located. With a long wheelbase of 2655mm, Toyota Avanza ensures better and larger legroom for the passengers.

Being an entry level MPV, you probably wouldn't expect much out of Toyota Avanza when it comes to interiors, but surprisingly it does not fail to impress. The plush interiors give the driver a bit more ‘upmarket’ experience ditching the conventional utility style on most MPV’s. The lowered instrument cluster offers better visibility. This is complemented by centrally located controls of air-vents, ventilation and audio controls. The interiors of Toyota Avanza have been intelligently designed by the means of thinner seat backs and door trimmings. All of this is done to increase the leg space, thus providing ultimate comfort to the passenger. The steering wheel embedded with Audio control switches, on the front of which is a dedicated MID display which displays fuel consumption and cruising range along with the standard display features (Available with only Luxury variants).

Interior Comfort

The dashboard is expected to be spacious enough to carry documents, CDs and other miscellaneous stuff. Avanza comes with a stock audio system which is decent enough with four speakers. However, audiophiles would want to get a custom, and a heavy audio player installed.

Interior Measurements

From the inside, the exact dimensions of Toyota Avanza measure 2480mm x 1415mm x 1270mm (L X W X H), this ensures enough headroom and a decent amount of legroom for all the passengers. The boot-space of Toyota Avanza is a clear winner amongst the competitors employing a huge 899 litres of load carrying capacity.

Engine and Performance

Toyota Avanza is an entry level MUV designed specifically to operate in city conditions. Having said that, we can only expect the power generated to be decent at best. The 1.5 litre Automatic and Manual transmission variants employ a 4 cylinder, 16 Valve DOHC engine accompanied by Chain Drive and Toyota forte VVT-i which ensures better mileage, acceleration and overall engine performance. This dedicated engine brings out a maximum output power of 104 PS inline with a maximum starting torque measuring 136 Nm at 4400 rpm. The base variants (auto and manual transmission) employ a K3-VE 4 cylinder,in line, 16 valve DOHC engine with VVTi, the maximum output power is 92 PS at 6000 rpm in line with a maximum starting torque measuring 117 Nm at 4400 rpm.

The base variant Toyota Avanza 1.3E employs 14 inch steel rims, while all the other variants appoint 14 inch or 15 inch alloy rims depending on the variants. The tyre size for 14 inch rims measures 185/70 R14 and that for 15 inch alloy rims measures 185/65 R15.

Stereo and accessories

All the variants of Toyota Avanza come embedded with Integrated audio system with top variants appointing a 2-DIN Head Unit with Tuner, CD Player, WMA, AUX-Jack, USB and iPod Compatibility alongside 6 speakers. The entry level variants employ a pretty primitive 1-DIN Head Unit CD Player with Tuner, MP3, AUX-Jack and USB. 6 speakers are embedded in the 1.5-litre variants as opposed to 4 in the base variant.

Braking and Handling

The Toyota Avanza comes with a very efficient braking system. The front brakes are loaded up with disc brakes while the rear uses a drum brake. The braking system lies in tandem with the suspension of the Avanza making the ride smoother and safer. The MacPherson Strut with Coil Spring & Stabiliser in the front and the 4-link suspension with coil spring and lateral rod makes aids Avanza in tiding over those potholes with absolute ease leaving the passengers not knowing what they just went through.

While focusing on the aesthetics, Toyota has made sure that safety is not compromised. It comes with several safety features to keep both the driver and the passenger safe in case of any mishap. Toyota has strengthened the body to a new level. The GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment) body makes the ride even safer. In the case of any collision, the force of the impact is dissipated throughout the entire body of the frame to minimize the risk of injury to the passengers. The top model, which is the 1.5L variant boasts of dual SRS airbags for the driver and the front passenger. It also has the Anti-Lock braking system (ABS) coupled with EBD + Brake assist which allows the car to have a firm tractive grip on the road. Both the airbags and the ABS are not present in the 1.3L variant.

  • The interiors are very spacious despite the frame being small
  • The boot space can be extended by a big margin by folding the last row seats.
  • Low price

  • The 4-speed gearbox is pretty old for today’s standard
