Mercedes Benz B-Class Review

Introduction

The Mercedes Benz B-Class is the second hatchback car from the company placed above entry level A-Class, however the company calls it a compact sports tourer instead of hatchback. The introduction of this car was carried out back in year 2005 and it has seen few makeovers since then. This is a front wheel drive car which is distinct to the other vehicle's from the alleged manufacturer which are not based on the same drive system. The engine inside the car is a moderate performer which can handle the situations well over different types of terrains and driving conditions. The equipment level of the car is good enough for a car of its class.

Engine, Mileage & Variants

The engine under the hood is the 1.6-liter engine which looks great over the paper. This engine churns out 115 kW of power at 5300 rpm and the torque associated to the same is 250 Nm at 1250 to 4000 rpm. The engine is reliable and has a lot of energy for highway cruising and city rides, but it goes a bit harsh at times. The automatic transmission lever is shifted behind the steering wheel from the central position, and the paddle shifts are propelled to get the ease of driving. The car can reach the 100 kmph mark in just 8.6 seconds and can acquire the top speed of 220 kmph. Mercedes has tried good to make this car efficient which makes it run 14.7 kmpl.

Exteriors

The B-Class is quite similar to the A-Class and this car has a similar face with the same as well. The headlights, LED lamps, broad grill and wide dimension are good to see, while the rear looks to be redesigned from any other Mercedes. The car looks to be styled in a wagon's shape due to its noticeable height, but the overall design looks sporty and courageous. The car measures its dimensions as 4359 mm of length, 1786 mm of width and 1557 mm of height. The long wheelbase of 2699 mm allows more space inside the cabin. The 17 inch alloy wheels adds a grown up image while the 18 inch sport variants make it look bolder.

Interiors

The B-Class fascinates with its interior quality and it has a good bunch of fitments as well. The roomier cabin has space for all your belongings and it manages well to make five people sit properly and comfortably inside. At the dashboard, the shape of AC vents is like heavy blowers which define it to be very powerful. The glossy black finish with pinches of matte color is varying the texture. The audio system is equipped with Bluetooth connectivity and it supports 6 CD changer, USB/Aux input, universal media interface and a 5.7 inch screen. The seats of the Merc B-Class are comfortable for front passengers while rear seats lacks with under thigh support. At the boot, one can store 486-liters of luggage and 1545 liters with rear seats folded.

Safety, Braking and Miscellaneous

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is a safe car and runs smoothly over plain surfaces. The vehicle is good on handling and road manners. It consists of all dominant safety elements along with some additional factors. The emergency brake assist flashes the rear lights brightly when the sudden brakes are applied to avoid the risk of collision from a vehicle behind. The attention assist checks for the driver's fatigue situation over longer trips and prompts for the same while the adaptive braking system conveys shorter and balanced braking distances over sudden braking. Moreover, it is fitted with ABS, front, side, knee and curtain airbags, skid control and crash responsive emergency lights.

Verdict

The B-Class from Mercedes is a good car to have; it is good on design, practicality and space, but it lacks rear seat comfort which are not fully folding. The car is expensive and one can have some fully fledged other luxury cars at the same price. The responsive nature of engine and plush interiors would be counted among lead earning pros.
