Maserati GranTurismo Review
In the world of automobiles nothing is constant, the styling changes with time, the dynamics change with time and the technology, it multiplies exponentially. In such world full of uncertainties, Charles Darwin's rule applies, much like any other aspect of one's surrounding. The fittest survives and the weak go may day. The top-end luxury sport segment is one region where millions of dollars are spent on R & D and if the product does not match the market's expectations, the end result can turn out catastrophic for the multinationals. It is therefore very important that the drive stands out from its rivals, brings something with an X-Factor which makes the flaws look insignificant. For Maserati, the Italian elite automobile manufacturer, that X-Factor is its designing cue. With GranTurismo, Maserati takes the fight straight to its more established European rivals – it has made a fabulous-looking, highly desirable elite trident product, the sheer looks of which are enough to curb its little flaws in dynamics and durability. On the performance aspect, GranTurismo is a beast that just fools you with its impeccably decent flowing lines. The 4.2-litre V8 engine delivers a maximum power output measuring 405 hp at 7000 rpm alongside a maximum torque which clocking 460 Nm at 4750 rpm. These numbers are incremented further with a bigger and meaner 4.6-litre V8 powerhouse which delivers a maximum power output of 460 hp at 7100 rpm alongside a maximum torque which clocks 460 bhp at 7100 rpm with a maximum starting torque worth 520 Nm at 4750 rpm. This raw power leads to an amazing performance breaching the 100 kmph checkpoint from a halt in 4.5 – 5.2 seconds with a top speed in the range of 285-305 kmph. The USP of GranTurismo is definitely its styling, no car with a V8 looks more appealing on the first glance and somehow it manages to create a camouflage, across its designing you fail to see how large the drive actually is. It seats four passengers in a surrounding of immense luxury, is practical, runs real fast and provides a decent handling at high speed levels. Despite all the glitz and glamour, GranTurismo is safe as well, with a plethora of safety (active and passive) aspects at its grasp. Read our detailed review for more.
Mileage and Fuel Economy
The price of car and the its fuel economy importance share an inversely proportional relationship normally. However, a decent number is still important in any segment. Maserati GranTurismo however, with its fuel economy measuring 6.8 kmpl comes across as a rather disappointed when compared to other top products in the market.
The beauty turns into a beast when it comes to power, and the drive delivers a thrilling performance which is a result of staggering engine equipped under the hood. The 4.2-litre V8 engine delivers the maximum power 405 bhp at 7000 rpm and the maximum torque measures 460 Nm at 4750 rpm. The 4.6-litre V8 engine further improves the power output and the maximum power measures 460 hp at 7100 rpm alongside the maximum torque of 520 Nm at 4750 rpm.
Acceleration and Pick-Up
The remarkable V8 makes provision for a lasting and incremented performance. This raw power leads to an amazing performance breaching 0-100 kmph in 4.5 – 5.2 seconds with a top speed in the range of 285-305 kmph.
As mentioned before, exterior is pretty much the USP of Maserati GranTurismo. Everything seems crafted to perfection. Leading the aesthetics is its signature grille with chrome trident in the middle. The long, dramatic bonnet with curvaceous bulges that is replicated at the rear too, the oval shaped nose surrounding the eye-catching grille with concave horizontal slats and the company's crown gives the car an authoritative and magnificent front look. The stretched and gracious 'V' bonnet design with the fluidic aerodynamic hints and curved bulges, the oval shaped nose in the form of the chromed grille with concave horizontal slats and the eye-catching company's crown and the sharp and dazzling headlamps gives the convertible a captivating front look. The distinctive fabric soft-top design which lets the innovative spirit of the convertible to life without considerable difference in the weight of the car despite its large size. The other striking attributes include the signature 3 side air vents, the sporty and stylish rear design that hints strength, the exclusive wraparound tail lamps and the two twin exhaust finishers.
GranTurismo is much larger than you would think it is, the grand tourer with a four person seating capacity houses dimension count measuring 4881mm x 2056mm x 1353mm (L x W x H).
The magnificence outside, continues the tradition inside Maserati GranTurismo. The cabin is highly spacious owing to the huge wheelbase and overall size of this tourer, The black/chrome dashboard looks futuristic and so do the highly effective air vents. The upholstery is provided with the most finely crafted Poltrona Frau leather which also makes an appearance on the steering wheel. The steering wheel is smooth even at the most stiff turns and is coupled with an 8.8-inch touchscreen with 3D GPS Navigation. You have all sorts of drive modes, climate control mechanisms, paddle shift at an arm's distance in the form of dedicated buttons which clearly reflects that it is not just a drive that looks good, it feels good as well.
We wouldn't be lying if we say that the cabin of GranTurismo seems tailor-made for comfort. This comfort, however, on some occasions seems hampered because of the coupe-sport design, which results in lack of headroom, especially for the rear passengers. Practicality is thought about, with 2 cup holders appointed for storing your basic knick-knacks. The wrap-around seats in the front completely does justice to an all electric seat adjustment system helps the driver in achieving the best possible driving position. The ergonomic three spoke leather clad steering wheel, with controls for interacting with the main multimedia functions, frames a simple yet striking instrument panel.
Unlike its Cabriolet version, GranTurismo offers a significant boot space measuring 265 litres. This may be a disappointing figure for some, but in the segment, having a boot at all is a blessing.
Engine and Performance
When it comes to power GranTurismo never hides what it is truly capable of, and the drive delivers a thrilling performance which is a result of staggering engine equipped under the hood. For better end result, all this raw power is bundled with 8-speed ZF transmission (paddle shift available) so as to achieve a bit higher performance and precision.
Stereo and Accessories
As mentioned before, the sound of V8 engine rumbling is music to any auto enthusiasts ears, but obviously there is an elite level sound system embedded in this elite level drive. It is a premium sound system, credits of which go to Bowers & Wikins. This system is coupled with a 16 channel 1280 Watt amplifier and 15 speakers position ergonomically to maximize the acoustics.
As standard, the diamond alloy 18 inch wheels are deployed in Maserati GranTurismo with tyre size 235/50 R18. The 19/20/21 inch alloy wheels on the other hand are also available as optional.
Braking and Handling
An efficient provision for braking is probably the most important thing in a true roadster and hence, Maserati GranTurismo comes packing customized Brembo brakes – these are coupled together with double cast disc brakes which are a perfect blend of light aluminium and cast iron. This braking mechanism is coupled with ABS (Anti Lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution system) and BA (Brake Assist). The handling is a result of dual wishbone suspension on the front and five arm rear multilink suspension sported on the rear.
Safety and Security
When it comes to the safety of its occupants the car does not take the slightest of risks. The purely light and undoubtedly strong body of the car is precisely engineered to serve an unbeatable dynamism and ultra-sound strength. The completely re-calibrated Dynamic Stability Control employed in the car keeps a precise track of over-steer and under-steer. Along with the car employs the traction control system, braking assistance and the basic safety features like the front, side and rear airbags and pre-tensioner seat belts. Hill-start assist, ABS, EBD, BA all come as standard.
