Mazda MX-5 11 Review
Known for its high performance cars, Mazda tried its fate in automobile in the year 1920. With the launch of its first model Mazda-Go, this Japanese auto marque gave a huge boom to the brand. Yet again with this inspiration and self confidence the brand is out with its new roadster Mazda MX 5. Debuted in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show, this rear wheel drive roadster was built based on the evolution of small British and Italian sports roadster. When it reached its second generation it was one of the best selling 2-seater convertible but after the 2008 economic crisis the Mazda market faced a huge downfall. But after the launch of the third generation MX 5, this Japanese multi national took a huge leap and since then it has never turned back.
Engine, mileage and variants:
Packed with power and elegance, the new Mazda accommodates a MZR 2.0-litre gasoline engine under its hood. Blending charge in the 4-cylinder engine, the new MX 5 churns out a maximum power of 118 kW at 6700 rpm. Rear wheel drive arrangement of the roadster is availed with a peak torque of 188 Nm at 5000 rpm. 6-speed Direct Activematic transmission mated with the powerhouse allows it to hit 0-100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds. Light weight body structure and power packed engine allows the roadster to attain a top speed of 209 km/h. Though powered with a high performance engine it still delivers a decent city mileage of 8.9 km/l and a highway mileage of 11.9 km/l.
Considering the aerodynamic factor of the vehicle, the MX 5 is designed to eliminate the maximum aerodynamic drag. The lengthy look and stream lined body on the side enhances the aerodynamic trait of the vehicle. Wide open radiator grilles at the front allows the vehicle to gasp ample air to the engine bay. Sleek design of the head lamps with broad wheel arches gives the car a macho persona. Hard top roof of the convertible gets transformed and hides near the boot area. High mounted third brake lights and chrome embossed dual exhaust tips gives the MX 5 an athlete trait. Measurement of 4020mm X 1720mm X 1255mm (LXWXH) gives the Mazda a compact silhouette. 17-inch alloys of the car matches the elegant look of the car.
Sporty look of the car houses a fit and finely finished interior. Detailed stitching of the leather upholstery done to the MX 5 offers a sporty touch to the interior of the car. Leather wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel of the car is a sports car inspired concept that enhances the driving dynamics of the car. Instrument cluster with efficient illumination avails the driver with almost all driving parameter required during propulsion. Ergonomically arranged controls on the centre console offers decent set of operation that makes the driving even more pleasurable. Bose premium sound system of the car has 7 speaker combination that avails you with quality acoustic all in the cabin. Cargo area of 150-litres is enough to settle the amenities used during daily commute.
Safety, Braking and Miscellaneous:
Ventilated discs at the front and solid disc at the rear comes with anti-lock braking system that avails you with safe and efficient braking performance. With double wishbone at the front and multi link at the rear, the MX 5 avails the occupants with a stable and comfortable ride even at varied road conditions. Electronic brake distribution system housed in the car offers equal amount of brake force to each wheel, thus griping the tarmac and reducing the risk of traction loss. Dynamic stability control and traction control system maintains the stability of the car while maneuvering sharp turns. Mazda advanced impact distribution and absorption system offers ample protection of the occupants while having a frontal collision. Besides this, the dual SRS air bag enables the occupants to escape fatal injuries during collision.
When it comes to aesthetics, it has innovative look and nice sporty interior, the Mazda MX 5 stands way ahead of its rival. But peeping under the hood you would realize that compared to its rivals, it still lags behind in terms of power and performance.
